Educational Programs

The Misfit Toys Repertory Company is a newly established not-for-profit theater ensemble in New York City. We are a diverse group of artists - actors, writers, directors, and designers - all with the same goal in mind: changing traditional views of theater. Collectively, we aim to think outside the box, using our individual talents to develop groundbreaking new theater. In addition to our artistic goals, our mission is strongly committed to educational outreach. We invite you and your students to participate in the opportunities offered in our evolving Misfit Toys' educational programs. These include educational initiatives appropriate to students of both literature and drama at the high school and college levels.

Our ensemble is making every effort to offer these programs at absolute minimal or no cost, although we welcome tax-deductible donations to help our efforts continue. If you would like more information, or to sign up for one of the workshops, please contact the Misfit Toys Educational Outreach Committee at education@MisfitToysRep.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

Cue Script Workshops
With an aim to introduce new generatons of students to classical theater, we are offering educators and students participation in our Cue Script Workshops. Elizabethan actors learned Shakespeare's text almost extemporaneously through the use of cue-scripts, sides containing only their lines and the last few words of the actor's line preceding it. The sometimes lengthy scripts, pasted together, were also known as rolls. With little or no rehearsal, actors followed period staging protocols and practices in performance, taking direction from the very text itself. We present the basics of this method to educators in a half-day workshop to join lessons of history, language, and performance skills. We then invite them to share what they've learned with their English and drama students either on their own or in an extended five session program with our Company's active participation.

Upcoming Cue Script Workshops
We were thrilled to begin offering this workshop during our recent Festival. Additional workshops will be held at the request of local educators in the future. There are no costs associated with this program, though lunch and travel reimbursements are always appreciated. We will make all of the course materials available to you electronically to share with your students at no charge. We're serious, the program is yours for free.

School Productions
Our goal is to always have several productions appropriate to students in repertory. Our first offering is CSI: Verona, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet told through the eyes of a crime scene investigations in parody of popular television programs. This new work recently premiered to enthusiastic audiences and favorable reviews  during our 1st Annual Misfit Festival at the Paradise Factory Theatre. A clever jab at popular culture, CSI: Verona was written with the intent to break down the plot and the verse structure, thereby making Romeo and Juliet more accessible to secondary school students. It is our hope to bring this production into schools in the Fall and we're always happy to speak with educators interested in seeing if it's appropriate to their school and curriculum. We welcome your inquiries about working with us to bring these programs to your students.

Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew will be performed in repertory with John Fletcher's The Tamer Tamed September 15th-28th. These companion pieces are rarely performed together, and will provide for excellent class discussion about historical gender bias and artistic choices. We would be happy to discuss student discounts or even special performances for you during its run. Educators interested in setting up interviews with the cast and artistic staff, or even having a performance at their school, should contact us as early as possible.
